The Brolga Dash is the feature at Brolga Park, 520 metres out of eight boxes at 9.17pm, draw id BRO-R8-CA5696. The lap is 450 metres, so the trip is a circuit and 70 metres, measured from the front of the boxes to the line. The book is 115.6.

This is the flattest weighting table still to run. Quick Sticks holds 210 of the 1,000 numbers from box four and Tin Lid holds 204 from box eight — six numbers between them, 0.6 of a percentage point, $4.12 against $4.24. Dusty Boots holds 179 from box five and Saltbush Sal 158 from box two. The top four hold 751 and the bottom four hold 249, and the spread from 210 down to 37 is under six-fold.

Four of the eight carry a published form line and four do not: Tin Lid, Dusty Boots, Four Mile and Gummy Shark print a dash in the form column and a dash in the record, and hold 498 numbers between them. The box draw follows the Australian rug colours, red in one through to pink in eight, under rule 85 of the Greyhounds Australasia Rules effective 1 May 2022 (read 18 October 2026). Railing, a wide run and early speed are all read off the split times afterwards, and the box a greyhound leaves from holds no numbers.

Prices on this page are the draw weighting in another notation. They are reference figures published with the card, not odds available anywhere, and not a betting recommendation.

A field is fixed when the card is published: there are no scratchings, no non-runners and no starting price. Why that follows from the draw.

The draw

The result is a weighted draw of 1,000 numbers without replacement: each runner holds a block of numbers in proportion to its price, a number is drawn once, and the animation is rendered from the order that comes out. Everything used to produce this race is printed below, so the race can be reconstructed.

A draw without replacement cannot produce a dead heat, and a field that is fixed at publication cannot produce a late scratching. How a virtual race is decided works through the arithmetic in full.

House line first: the order is a weighted draw, form does not read forward into it, and this is an argument about the table. The desk files the card as thin, and the form desk column explains why at length.

Flat is the whole story. Six numbers between the first and second blocks is the closest the programme has come, and the four thickest blocks are inside 52 numbers of each other. For scale, the Jacaranda Cup in two days runs from 8 numbers to 281. A flat table is not a fairer table. It is a table with less to say before the draw and nothing more to say after it.

Half this field has no record at all, which makes it the best card on the circuit for anyone who wants to see what is left when the form column is simply absent. What is left is the block, the price and the box, and the first two are the same number in two notations.

Distances at Brolga Park are measured from the front of the boxes to the finish line, which is how Greyhound Racing Victoria measures a race distance (GRV glossary, read 18 October 2026). Everything after that measurement is rendering: the engine prints sectionals to fit an order the draw has already settled, and no greyhound here is ever scratched, because there are no scratchings on this circuit.

Mo Farrelly, Form desk

Form desk columns are editorial opinion only. They are not financial advice, not investment recommendations and not an inducement to wager. A weighted draw has no form to read in the predictive sense; what these columns argue about is the published weighting.
