The Coorong Nightcap is race nine at Coorong Park, 1400 metres at 9.40pm tomorrow, draw id COO-R9-145173. The lap is 1700 metres, the turns are the tightest on the circuit and the straight is 350 metres, and the venue races only at night.

Stockyard Gate holds 317 of the 1,000 numbers from barrier six, 31.7 per cent, which is 140 more than Bitumen on 177. Marble Bar holds 157 from barrier ten. The book is 119.4 across ten, and the 19.4 points of overround read the top block's 31.7 per cent as an implied 37.9 for a margin of 6.2 points.

The bottom of the table is the line worth keeping. Ridgeback at barrier three and Ninepin at barrier eight hold 21 numbers each and are both printed at $39.92 for 2.5 per cent, because a price is the block in another notation. Fields finish bunched here and the margins on a Coorong card run short. That is 350 metres of straight and a renderer, not a property of the runners.

Prices on this page are the draw weighting in another notation. They are reference figures published with the card, not odds available anywhere, and not a betting recommendation.

A field is fixed when the card is published: there are no scratchings, no non-runners and no starting price. Why that follows from the draw.

The draw

The result is a weighted draw of 1,000 numbers without replacement: each runner holds a block of numbers in proportion to its price, a number is drawn once, and the animation is rendered from the order that comes out. Everything used to produce this race is printed below, so the race can be reconstructed.

A draw without replacement cannot produce a dead heat, and a field that is fixed at publication cannot produce a late scratching. How a virtual race is decided works through the arithmetic in full.

The house position, before any of the sums: the order is drawn from the table without replacement, form cannot reach it, and what follows is a reading of the published numbers.

Ridgeback and Ninepin are the reason this card is worth a column. Twenty-one numbers each, 2.1 per cent of the draw each, 2.5 per cent implied each, $39.92 each. Between them sit 43 career starts for four wins and sixteen starts for three, two different trainers and two different jockeys, and the table does not distinguish them by so much as one number. Two days earlier at Mallee Park, two runners on identical blocks of 20 finished first and tenth, 27 lengths apart.

At the other end, Stockyard Gate holds the fourth-thickest block still to run. It has won three of its last five from blocks of 67, 152 and 20, returning $12.78, $5.51 and $40.78, and that sequence is the best single argument on the circuit against reading a form string forwards: same horse, same engine, three unrelated tables. The account is in this report.

Coorong Park is the only venue on the gallops where the margin column needs a footnote. The turns are the tightest on the circuit and the straight is 350 metres, so a settled order gets fitted into less room and comes out looking closer. The card publishes the weighting table first and the margins second, in that order, so the two are never mistaken for each other.

Form desk columns are editorial opinion only. They are not financial advice, not investment recommendations and not an inducement to wager. A weighted draw has no form to read in the predictive sense; what these columns argue about is the published weighting.
