The Wattle Hill Cup is 1800 metres at Wattle Hill at 5.35pm in two days, draw id WAT-R6-4E1ED6. The lap is 1600 metres, right-handed and undulating, with 300 metres of straight — the shortest run to the post of the six gallops venues — so the trip is a circuit and 200 metres. The book is 121.8 across ten.

Paper Lantern holds 259 of the 1,000 numbers from barrier three, Stockyard Gate 192 from barrier six and Bitumen 170 from barrier one. Those three hold 621 between them. Then the table drops: the fourth block is Tin Whistle on 94, and seven of the ten hold fewer than a hundred numbers.

At the foot of the card Fence Line and Half Mast hold 24 numbers each and are both printed at $34.18 for 2.9 per cent. The rise through the back straight is the one piece of real terrain on the circuit and it sits in the venue's geometry file, not in the weighting table: no runner is given a number for staying a hill.

Prices on this page are the draw weighting in another notation. They are reference figures published with the card, not odds available anywhere, and not a betting recommendation.

A field is fixed when the card is published: there are no scratchings, no non-runners and no starting price. Why that follows from the draw.

The draw

The result is a weighted draw of 1,000 numbers without replacement: each runner holds a block of numbers in proportion to its price, a number is drawn once, and the animation is rendered from the order that comes out. Everything used to produce this race is printed below, so the race can be reconstructed.

A draw without replacement cannot produce a dead heat, and a field that is fixed at publication cannot produce a late scratching. How a virtual race is decided works through the arithmetic in full.

House line first, as always: a weighted draw has no form to read forward, so this is an argument about the published table.

This card is the one place in the programme where the two columns agree at the top, and the agreement is a coincidence. Paper Lantern holds the thickest block on the card and has thirteen career wins from 57 starts, a total only Pennyroyal matches here. The same horse holds 44 numbers in the Jacaranda Cup two hours and twenty-five minutes earlier the same afternoon, and 22 at Mallee Park two days before. One record, three tables, nothing passing between them.

Fence Line and Half Mast on 24 numbers each is the useful pair. Half Mast won a twelve-runner sprint at Saltbush Flat four days before this card from a block of 210; Fence Line has four career wins and nine thirds from 41 starts. Identical blocks, identical prices, and the weighting table has nothing further to add about either of them.

The stable pairs are worth a line because they show how little the table cares. Three trainers saddle two runners each, and two of the three pairs sit at opposite ends of the table: 259 and 36, 192 and 24. The undulation carries no weight either, and the venue page says so in the same words the runner profiles use.

Mo Farrelly, Form desk

Form desk columns are editorial opinion only. They are not financial advice, not investment recommendations and not an inducement to wager. A weighted draw has no form to read in the predictive sense; what these columns argue about is the published weighting.
