Who built the screen wall, and when it went up
The earliest date anyone will put in writing is 2001, and it comes from the company that builds the races.
The oldest date anyone will put in writing for virtual racing in a British betting shop is 2001, and it comes from the company that builds the races. Inspired Entertainment's release of 29 November 2017 says the 49's tracks have been "ever present in all UK LBO's since 2001". No trade-press, regulator or newspaper report from 2000 to 2004 has been found to corroborate it.
Everything else is softer. SIS, announcing a product upgrade on 30 November 2023, said 49's "was the first brand to launch Inspired's virtual products over 20 years ago". At the June 2020 takeover the 49's chairman Mike Jones put the working relationship at about twenty years. The hardest documentary anchor for the brand itself is Companies House, where 49'S (1996) LIMITED, company number 03285628, was incorporated on 29 November 1996. That is the age of a company, not the launch of a product, and this desk will not print it as one.
The division of labour is the load-bearing fact and it is routinely reported backwards. SIS owns the brands; Inspired builds the content. SIS acquired 100 per cent of 49's in June 2020 from GVC and William Hill, terms undisclosed, taking the live draws and the virtual brands together — Portman Park, Sprint Valley and Steepledowns on the horses, Brushwood and Millersfield on the dogs.
The 2023 upgrade covered exactly those five products, for betting shops in Britain and Ireland. Five venues, running generic races: every title on a Portman Park card reads HANDICAP FLAT, dozens of times a day, with no named races and no grades. There is no starting price on that product either, because there is no market to return.
Scale is where the numbers stop agreeing with the memory. The Guardian reported on 13 August 2007 that virtual races accounted for 17 per cent of British horse-racing bets and more than £700 million a year in turnover; this desk read that figure in a later academic citation rather than the original page. The Gambling Commission's data to March 2025 shows virtual betting running at roughly £3 million of gross gambling yield a month against roughly £200 million for real events, about 1.5 per cent. The two are not a trend line. One is retail turnover and the other is online yield, and the Commission notes its table covers the biggest operators, about 80 per cent of the online market.
Read together they say something a supplier release will not. Virtual racing's share of British horse-race betting looks to have peaked in the betting shop in the middle of the 2000s, not online now. The estate it peaked in has since fallen to 5,617 premises at March 2026, down 3.6 per cent in a year.
