The Trial was race one at Wattle Hill, 1400 metres at 11.20am five days ago. Draw id WAT-R1-DD5D9C, seed dd5d9c6c967db7a7, settled at 11:21 on a book of 116.7 across eight. A trial on this circuit is the lowest rung of the class ladder and it counts in the record like any other race.

Marble Bar held 255 of the 1,000 numbers from barrier one, 25.5 per cent. Then came a pair one number apart: Tin Whistle on 178 from barrier seven and Bitumen on 177 from barrier five, printed at $4.81 and $4.84. The thinnest block was Sunday Pages on 47, at $18.22.

The spread was 255 down to 47, a little over five-fold, which made it the second flattest table of the 21 the programme has published. The 1400 metres starts 200 metres past the post inside the home straight, so no chute is needed, and the rise through the back section is terrain geometry rather than a number in the table.

Prices on this page are the draw weighting in another notation. They are reference figures published with the card, not odds available anywhere, and not a betting recommendation.

A field is fixed when the card is published: there are no scratchings, no non-runners and no starting price. Why that follows from the draw.

The draw

The result is a weighted draw of 1,000 numbers without replacement: each runner holds a block of numbers in proportion to its price, a number is drawn once, and the animation is rendered from the order that comes out. Everything used to produce this race is printed below, so the race can be reconstructed.

A draw without replacement cannot produce a dead heat, and a field that is fixed at publication cannot produce a late scratching. How a virtual race is decided works through the arithmetic in full.

The draw came out 6, 5, 1, so the seventh block came out first and the third block followed a short half-head behind it on the screen — the shortest margin the programme has printed. Marble Bar, on 255 numbers and the thickest block on the card, came out third at 2.5 lengths.

House line first: the order was drawn from the published table, so a short half-head is a rendering decision about a settled result and nothing more.

It is also the shortest margin the programme has printed. The two runners it separated held 67 numbers and 177, which is 110 numbers apart on the table and a head apart on the screen. The circuit has no dead heats and cannot have any: a number is drawn once, without replacement, so no two runners can fill the same placing however close the frame looks.

The 255-number top block came out third at 2.5 lengths. A block of that size fails to come out first a little under three times in four. The pair on 178 and 177 came out fourth and second, and the one number between them is the whole of what the table had to say about which was which.

This was the first of Stockyard Gate's three wins from five starts and the first of Priya Sandhu's two from five rides. It is also the earliest card on the clock that the programme has resulted, at 11.20am, and the only Trial among the eight.
