The Standing Start Trot was race five at Gidgee Paceway, 2240 metres from a standing start at 8.04pm three days ago. Draw id GID-R5-497045, seed 4970452a156c0f17, settled at 20:05 on a book of 114.5 — the second-smallest on the circuit. The lap is 805 metres, so the trip was two laps and 630 metres and the tapes sat on the course proper.

Six stood on the front line and barriers seven and eight on the second, and the two thickest blocks on the card were the two standing behind. Night Shift held 256 of the 1,000 numbers from barrier eight and Copper Creek 246 from barrier seven — ten numbers apart, $3.41 against $3.55. Between them they held 502, which is half the draw standing on the back row.

The third block was Harbour Flyer on 165 from barrier three, and the thinnest was Bluebush Boy on 41. The winner's gross time of 2:39.5 reads as a mile rate of 1:54.6, which is the time multiplied by 1609 and divided by 2240 — the standard arithmetic, printed because a trip of this length cannot be compared with a mile any other way.

Prices on this page are the draw weighting in another notation. They are reference figures published with the card, not odds available anywhere, and not a betting recommendation.

A field is fixed when the card is published: there are no scratchings, no non-runners and no starting price. Why that follows from the draw.

The draw

The result is a weighted draw of 1,000 numbers without replacement: each runner holds a block of numbers in proportion to its price, a number is drawn once, and the animation is rendered from the order that comes out. Everything used to produce this race is printed below, so the race can be reconstructed.

A draw without replacement cannot produce a dead heat, and a field that is fixed at publication cannot produce a late scratching. How a virtual race is decided works through the arithmetic in full.

Harbour Flyer's 165 numbers held in 2:39.5 for a mile rate of 1:54.6, Night Shift on 256 came out second at 1.6 lengths and Copper Creek on 246 third at 4.3, and thirteen lengths covered the field.

The house line, which the result does not change: the order was drawn from the published table, so the start type, the line and the tapes are all description and none of them is a cause.

Ten numbers between the first and second blocks made this the tightest top of any harness card the programme has published, and both of those blocks stood on the second line. The draw brought the third block out first and then those two, in order, which is a sequence and not a mechanism: a standing start on this circuit moves the sprites and not the numbers.

The real arithmetic here is the mile rate. Over 2240 metres a gross time of 2:39.5 normalises to 1:54.6 for the mile, so it can be set beside the 1:53.8 the circuit's only 1609 metre mobile produced two nights later. The rate rather than the time is the figure the card leads with, because a time over 2240 metres and a time over 1609 metres are not comparable numbers.

This was Marnie Kessel's win, from barrier three, which is the only barrier the programme has given her on any of the 21 cards. Her season figures read one win from two drives, and two drives is the entire harness season to date for everybody on it: the desk prints the denominator beside the strike rate for exactly that reason.
